Southend Round Table has been honoured with its own plaque after donating thousands of pounds to a drop-in centre for victims of domestic violence. The Dove Project, based in West Road, Westcliff, has used the £4,500 for a new control board for emergency lights as well as a new telephone system. To mark the generous donation, a special plaque was put up at the centre. Support volunteer coordinator Pippa Simpson said: "A new phone system was very badly needed as it was very old. We couldn't divert to other offices. "The control board we had before was very large and took up most of a wall. It has been replaced with one much nicer looking and much smaller." The centre also held an open day this week to attract more volunteers from ethnic minorities. Ms Simpson said: "We do already have volunteers from ethnic minorities. We do really like to reach out to them. "It's better for us because Southend has got many different minorities. We get quite a mixture of people here." The centre runs a 24-hour emergency helpline on 01702 300006. |
